We are proud to announce that Emily Marcela Zeledón Flores (Class of 2021), was a delegate to HACIA Democracy XXVI (the first to be held in an online format) March 11-14, 2021. She earned the title of Best Delegate on the InterAmerican Court of Human Rights.

HACIA Democracy  is a trilingual annual conference modeled after the OAS (Organization of American States.)  The event is led by undergraduate students at Harvard University and is open to high school student from all over Latin America who are interested in the advance and development of democracy in the hemisphere.  The conference was cancelled last year and went virtual this year due to COVID-19, challenging organizers and participants to use all the technology at their desposal to make the event the success that it was.

In Emily's words:

“HACIA Democracy has been an enriching experience for me.  The entire process was challenging and rewarding, from investigating each of the court cases that were to be tried, to preparing to argue/defend various positions, to working toward a common goal with other delegates, to interacting with the undergraduates from Harvard, and receiving their feedback and assessments of our performances.  Over the course of the four day conference I was given the opportunity to debate current human rights issues. During each session, I was able to interact with delegates from all over Latin America.  By this means, I learned that my age should not keep me from being involved. “My generation is the future of Latin America and if we want to make progress as a society, fight injustice and defend what is right, the responsibility is ours."  I am grateful to God, my teachers and sponsor Annel Flores García for their encouragement and guidance throughout the months of study and preparation that made it possible for me to earn this distinction, which I share with them and our school."

Lastly, I encourage all students to take advantage of this kind of opportunity, which open our eyes to the need for us to take part in working to solve the problems plaguing our society."

May God bless you greatly, Emily, we are very proud of your achievements!
